I think this is only true if the mathematician is not waiting for the 52/54 in DC.  Waited ten minutes for a bus where the maximum wait was supposed to be ten minutes (and no, I didn’t see the “previous” bus pass, as I would have if I had in fact “just” missed it).  When the bus arrived, so did a second one.  They played leapfrog for two stops before the bus I was on broke down, disgorging all of its passengers.  The second bus was completely full so I aborted my bus ride at that point.

I walked the entire distance home before the third bus in this ten-minutes-apart sequence ever arrived, and it was a twenty minute walk.
